Fort Bliss troops head home from deployment

FORT BLISS — About 130 soldiers from the 4th Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division were scheduled to land at Biggs Airfield late Thursday night after serving in Afghanistan for nine months.

The 4-17th “Buffaloes” deployed last December and were part of coalition forces that did a variety of missions to promote a stable Afghanistan, according to a news release from Fort Bliss. Part of their duties were to train and mentor Afghan national security forces.Another 150 soldiers, also from the 1st Brigade, are scheduled to return home at 6 p.m. Sunday at Biggs.

They are from the 1st Battalion, 36th Infantry Regiment, nicknamed the Spartans.

Other similarly-sized units from the 1st Brigade will continue to return home to Fort Bliss between now and early fall.
