Free book offers veterans insight into post-combat emotions

On Dec. 19, veterans and their families will be able to download a free copy of  Taming the Fire Within — a guide written by a VA psychologist who aims to help them understand “post-combat reactions.”

Anne Freund has worked at the Department of Veterans Affairs in Central Florida since 2005, where she runs support group for patients with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Freund’s book is written in a conversational style to explain “natural” reactions to combat, which she says differ from PTSD but can be intense.

The stigma of PTSD can prevent some veterans from talking with those who could help them with “the intense emotions every combat soldier is burdened with when they transition back to civilian life,” Freund says in a statement.

The offer for a free download of her book will be made as part of the USA Network broadcast of the 2012 WWE Tribute to the Troops, airing as a two-hour television special 9 p.m. EST Wednesday, Dec. 19.
