Iowans spruce up holiday with ‘Trees for Troops’

Army veteran Gary Harman will never forget being overseas in 1968 and experiencing a lonely Christmas Day in Heidelberg, Germany.

“Christmas Day away was one of the longest days I’ve ever spent,” said Harman.

That experience still compels him to offset the loneliness, in any way he can, for the men and women in the military. That’s why he woke before 5 a.m. Tuesday, braving near-single-digit temperatures to cut down fresh Christmas trees on his farm in Indianola, Iowa.
