Defense Secretary calls veteran suicides ‘most frustrating challenge’
The nation’s Secretary of Defense, Leon Panetta, said suicide is “the most frustrating challenge” of his position while calling on anyone with direct contact with troops into the effort of battling against it.
Panetta spoke Friday, adding the Department of Defense’s best efforts to combat the issue can be reinforced by prevention efforts of leaders on the front lines, the Navy Times reports.
“We will not tolerate actions that belittle, that haze, that ostracize any individual, particularly those who have made the decision to get help,” Panetta said, according to the report. “Leadership throughout the department must make it understood that seeking help is a sign of strength, not a sign of weakness.”
